Simson & Co. began building guns in Suhl, Germany in 1856 until 1936 when Hitler's dictatorship forced the Jewish Simson family to flee Germany. The company continued to operate under Nazi control until the defeat of Germany in 1945. The company was in the Russian Zone of Occupation and then made motorcycles for the Russians.
Simson & Co made very fine sporting arms in the town of Suhl before WW I and up to the beginning of WW II. When the Nazis took power the firm was confiscated from the Simson family, who were Jewish. Following WW II the firm was briefly returned to the Simson family, but again seized, this time by the East German authorities.
Simson Suhl were a German arms manufacturer and steel works. They made a range of guns, including Lugers and G98s before WW2. The company were owned by a Jewish family, so was taken over by the Nazis before the war. The East Germans started them up again after the war but for sporting guns and I think, motor scooters.

FC1 is correct about Simson. A little further info; after the Soviet takeover of East Germany many of the smaller firms in Suhl Zella Mehlis were put under the umbrella of Simson. FC1, is your einstecklauf in 22 Mag. full length or one of the shorty's Sempert Krieghoff made?

Simson is the maker, Suhl is the town in Germany and Thüringen is the state in which Suhl resides. It's definitely a Suhl gun as the shield with the shoe sole and the pick through it is the symbol for the Suhl proof house. Special Gewehrlaufstahl just means "special, firearms barrel steel".
Simson & Co was a gunmaker in Suhl, Germany that began producing guns in 1910. The Nazis took over the factory before WW2 the family was Jewish. After WW2 the East Germans began producing guns again using the Simson name. I ssume that your gun is a SxS. The 12 70 stamp says that it is a 12 gauge with 70mm (2 3 4 inch) chambers.

First: It is not a Simson. Yes, Merkel made shotguns using the Simson name, but they were clearly marked "Simson" given that that name was very well regarded. Also, there are no Simson trademarks (logos) on your gun. Second: While I am not well versed in Merkel, I doubt very much that what you have is a Merkel. Again, they are clearly marked.
