For many MST survivors, establishing service connection for mental and or physical injuries caused by MST represents personal validation as well as recognition of and gratitude for their honorable service. DAV supports lessening the evidentiary burden for MST cases, more closely in line with what is currently required for combat veterans.
The story featured Army veteran and MST survivor Migdalia Griswold. Like Garcia, Griswold was given an other than honorable discharge after an assault and was left to deal with the fallout of trauma on her own. DAV ultimately helped Griswold get her discharge status upgraded so she could access the benefits she earned.
Intervention: The VA’s innovative model to predict suicidality and intervene with high risk veterans uses male veterans as its baseline and does not consider MST. Access: According to the VA, 1 in 4 women veterans live in rural areas, and rural veterans face significant barriers to accessing health care.
