New radiator fixed it. Merecedes genuine part was the cheapest, under $400. But it took several hours to get it out, as you have to remove quite a bit to get the radiator support off to get the whole assembly out. The o ring itself is an easy, and leakproof, way to connect the hose.
Adding this to the old thread. This is a pic from the Merecedes Factory Service manual on removing the lower ball joint. Note the 'supporting joint' is the lower ball joint. Believe it or not the Mercedes special tool is just a cylindrical chunk of metal punch.
