This plan of management establishes the NPWS’ specific management strategies for Towra Point Nature Reserve and the international values for which the reserve was established.

Dredging and construction of retaining walls, possibly affecting wave movements within the bay, may affect the seagrass meadows adjacent to the Nature Reserve and cause shoreline erosion, thus diminishing many of conservation values described above.

Human activities include recreation and non commercial fishing, with surrounding areas developed for industrial, residential and recreational uses.

Criterion 3: Towra Point Nature Reserve is an important area for maintaining the biodiversity of the Sydney region. Its seagrass beds, in conjunction with its mangrove and saltmarsh communities, provide critical shelter and food for juvenile fish and crustaceans.

Areas should be biogeographically representative and allow animals to move between the areas. This marine ecosystem is an "open system" it is affected by the ocean, surrounding urban areas, the Georges River, etc. This makes it difficult to implement management strategies that are effective.

The Towra Point wetlands are the largest and most diverse estuarine wetland complex remaining in the Sydney region. The nature reserve and adjoining wetlands are critical to the viability of important remnant terrestrial vegetation and wildlife habitats that contain rare or threatened species.

The Towra Point Aquatic Reserve is managed by NSW Fisheries. The establishment of an Aquatic Reserve was designed to protect the highly significant marine habitats that surround the Nature Reserve (e.g. seagrasses) by placing restrictions on fishing and prohibiting bait gathering.

Bush regeneration works, including weed removal, completed in Towra Point Nature Reserve and adjacent land to support seed dispersal of native plants. Pest animal work completed to protect native fauna and shorebirds.
