Władysław Szpilman (Polish pronunciation: [vwaˈdɨswaf ˈʂpilman] ⓘ; 5 December 1911 – 6 July 2000) was a Polish Jewish pianist, classical composer and Holocaust survivor.

Towards the end of World War II, in a burnt out villa in the destroyed city of Warsaw, the Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman faced a German officer before an out of tune piano.

Wladyslaw Szpilman was a Jewish pianist living in Warsaw during WW2 whose musical abilities led German officer Wilm Hosenfeld to save his life.

Renowned composer and pianist Władysław Szpilman survived the Warsaw Ghetto, the Warsaw Uprising, and the harrowing post uprising period, during which he spent several months hiding among the ruins of the city. His story under German occupation became the basis for the Oscar winning film The Pianist, directed by Roman Polański.

The Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman lived in Warsaw with his parents and siblings. He played piano concertos for Polish radio until the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht in 1939.

Władysław Szpilman was a Polish pianist of Jewish heritage. His family was killed by the Germans during the Holocaust, but he miraculously survived both the Shoah and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.
