What is periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS)? Periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) is a movement disorder that involves repetitive leg and or arm movements during sleep. These movements can disrupt your sleep. Other names for this condition include sleep related myoclonus syndrome or nocturnal myoclonus syndrome.
Periodic limb movement disorder occurs only during sleep, but restless legs syndrome prompts an almost uncontrollable urge to move your legs to relieve uncomfortable sensations while awake.
The urge to move the legs is worse at rest and at night and is relieved by movement. RLS is commonly associated with sleep disturbance and with involuntary, jerking movements of the legs during sleep, known as periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS).
During sleep, PLMS causes involuntary leg (and sometimes arm) twitching or jerking movements. These movements typically happen every 15 to 40 seconds and can last throughout the night.
Symptoms occur mainly at night. Nighttime leg twitching. RLS may be associated with another, more common condition called periodic limb movement of sleep. This condition causes the legs to twitch and kick during sleep, possibly throughout the night. People typically describe RLS symptoms as compelling, unpleasant feelings in the legs or feet.
Periodic limb movement disorder involves repetitive movements of the arms, legs, or both during sleep. Restless legs syndrome involves an irresistible urge to move and usually abnormal sensations in the legs, arms, or both when people sit still or lie down.
About 80 percent of people with RLS also have periodic limb movement of sleep (PLMS). This causes involuntary leg twitching or jerking during sleep that can last all night long.
