The engine will always try to do it automatically, but if it cannot, a light will come on giving warning that a regen is due. At this point, the driver must change the duty cycle of the engine (get out on the highway and hammer down), or if that's not possible, pull over some where so he can do a manual regen.

The DD15 is a very clean engine, and you shouldn't have to do a parked regen under at least 100,000 to 150,000 miles. You may have something wrong with the regen system... if there was enough of a pressure difference across the DPF to require burning out the ash, I'd expect it would have done a simple rolling regen on a new truck.

I have code that says truck is doing regen too often. Its 13 KW T660 Cummins isx15. What could cause this? When doing forced regen laptop shows soot...

i googled it.. Hot Exhaust Gases Diesel engine exhaust gases vary with speed and load. High loads and high speeds result in the highest temperatures. Generally, temperatures of 500–700°C (932–1293°F) are produced in the exhaust gases from diesel cycle engines at 100% load to 200–300°C (392–572°F) with no load.

Sometimes the engine will be doing a "passive" regen during driving which requires no action at all from the driver. The only indication that it is in progress is the high exhaust temperature light will be on when you are driving slower than 5 mph.
