Oak Island was once home to three piers: Yaupon, Ocean Crest and Long Beach. Each was an outstanding king mackerel platform, in part because of the nutrient rich water pushing out of the mouth of the Cape Fear River attracts baitfish and predators alike.

It merged with neighboring Yaupon Beach in 1999 to form the town of Oak Island and is now a neighborhood of the town. The community derives its name from one of the longest stretches of beach in the area.
