NOAA and partners have developed an unprecedented, decades long approach to restore seven iconic coral reef sites in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
MISSION: ICONIC REEFS is a NOAA led, partner driven effort that aims to restore structure, function, and resiliency to nearly three million square feet of Florida’s Coral Reef over the next two decades.
Together, the partners will restore nearly three million square feet of the Florida Reef Tract, about the size of 52 football fields, at seven key reef sites. It is one of the largest strategies ever proposed in the field of coral restoration.
Mission: Iconic Reefs is a large scale NOAA led and partner driven coral restoration initiative within Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to restore seven ecologically and culturally significant coral reefs to self sustaining levels by 2040.
By 2040, the mission hopes to have restored 3 million square feet at 7 iconic reef locations—an area the size of 52 football fields—to at least 25 percent coral cover, which should be enough to allow them to repair themselves the rest of the way.
By restoring corals at seven iconic reef sites in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, we can change the trajectory of an entire ecosystem and help save one of the world’s most unique areas for future generations.
Mission: Iconic Reefs launched late 2019 in collaboration with world renowned scientists, local restoration partners, academia, industry, and federal and state agencies with a mission to restore seven, expert selected reefs to self sustaining levels by 2040.
The Coral Reef Stewardship Fund provides funding for innovation in coral reef management and science, threat reduction to coral reef systems prioritized by NFWF Hawaii business plan and the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, and capacity building for coral reef restoration and persistence.
A single, unified map of the Florida Reef Tract is an important tool for promoting a reef wide approach to protect Florida’s reefs. Researchers and managers use this map to identify critical coral reef habitats, monitor changes in sensitive areas over time, and prioritize sites for restoration.
Mission: Iconic Reefs is an innovative initiative spearheaded by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to restore nearly 3,000,000 square feet of the Florida Reef Tract, about the size of 52 football fields, at seven key reef sites – one of the largest strategies ever proposed for coral restoration.
